November 3 and 4, 2018
Troop 179 is mighty fine!
Strap on your boots and backpack because T179 is heading to the mountains for a weekend of self-contained, high-altitude (not really all that high), crisp Fall weather backpacking.
Cost: $20
Meet and travel: We meet at the church on Saturaday, November 3rd at 7:30AM. Drive 2 hours north to the Mohicon Outdoor Center (Blairstown, NJ) and park.
We will backpack around 6 miles – walking right along the FANTASIC Kittatiny Ridge – to a free AT group site near Sunfish Pond. Once camp is set up, we’ll dayhike explore – maybe go to Mt. Tamminy.
Sunday morning, we’ll make ourselves a hearty breakfast and backpack down to Worthington State Park where our shuttle will be waiting. We should be back in HT by 1:30-2:00PM Sunday.
Adult leaders: Mr. Stine, Mr. Mallgrave and Ms. Ravelli. We may need another parent or two. Please let me know if you’re interested. If not already, you’ll need to register with BSA and take Youth Protection online course. No big deal.
Equipment: The Troop and/or its leaders have several youth sized backpacks, sleeping bags and even hiking boots to lend out. There are several camp stoves that we can all share.
Staying warm: Learning how to “cold weather camp” is an important skill. We will be going over what you need to know to stay toasty and warm while hiking and while bundled in your sleeping bag at night. It’s no big deal.
Cooking and sleeping: All the scouts, with the help of the SPL, figure out menu, shopping, cooking and tenting assignments. No big deal.
